A water flosser (sometimes called a WaterPik) uses a stream of water to clean between the teeth and along the gumline.
It can be a helpful addition to brushing, especially for people with implants, crowns, or braces.
Reported benefits
Based on the material supplied for this article (including laboratory data cited in Suzanne’s source graphic):
- Can be more effective than string floss at reducing gum bleeding for some users
- Helps remove plaque associated with bad breath, gum disease, and tooth decay from treated areas
- Reaches between teeth and below the gumline where brushing alone cannot
- Often useful around implants and fixed orthodontic brackets
Does it replace floss or brushes?
A water flosser does not always replace interdental brushes or floss. During bad breath treatment planning, Suzanne can advise which aids suit your mouth.
Not sure which aid is right for you?
